Posted: 26 July 2013 - 15:59:29Once again the hot weather we have experienced this season is having a significant impact upon the peas in the field and factory.
Posted: 22 July 2013 - 16:13:42Not surprisingly the hot weather has dominated the start of the 2013 vining pea season.
Posted: 01 July 2013 - 08:40:54We have now completed our drilling survey for the 2013 crop. This year we have drilled 32,324 hectares of peas and petits pois for freezing and canning. This compares to 32,220 hectares drilled in 2012. In February we asked for estimated drilling areas and this totalled 31,707 hectares. So despite the changes in the industry, and the poor 2012 season, we are about the same area as last year.

Posted: 16 April 2013 - 15:05:41In England the peas season to forget seems to be drawing to a close with many groups finishing last week and others due to wind up over the next few days. Results are mostly disappointing with tonnages between 50 – 75% of contract. The one area which seems to have fared better is the north east of East Anglia where the results are more in line with expected budgets. However this will not make up for the significant short fall in the overall UK pea production in 2012. In Scotland there is still a long way to go and the weather is still causing problems with 24mm of rain yesterday in the Dundee area and reports of viners stuck in the mud. End of harvest is at least a month away there. Their later crops do have potential but they will need fair weather for that to be realised.

European vegetable canners and freezers in major producing countries report shortages
for peas and beans – two key crops for the sector.
Posted: 13 August 2012 - 09:10:49Improvement in the weather has certainly helped over the past couple of weeks with just some heavy showers between the warmer weather rather than the cold wet period that preceded it.
Posted: 06 August 2012 - 14:05:36There are going to be far fewer British peas to go around in 2012/13.
Posted: 25 July 2012 - 09:54:32An extremely difficult season from the start of drilling through to harvest. Working from North to South, some harvesting around Dundee started this week but yields are generally disappointing and not expected to get much better. In Yorkshire and Lincolnshire there are still very difficult field conditions and further rain this week has not helped. Generally yields are below budget and quality is below normal. The approaching crops are not looking any better. Some groups are expecting to stop harvesting for a few days after the interruption to drilling in April. In East Anglia there have been some better yields reported but ground conditions have been difficult with some localised storms causing havoc.
Posted: 13 July 2012 - 09:09:44The story across the whole country is the same. Too wet, too cold and poor field conditions causing havoc. Yields are poor in most places with only a few pockets of crops that are “average at best”. The long term forecast, until the end of the month, is for the same cold unsettled weather.
Posted: 07 June 2012 - 16:58:08The exceptional weather conditions this spring, with severe temperatures and excessive rain have greatly affected the outdoor cultivation of Belgian vegetables. Even if the longer term forecasts are better, the impact that the weather of the past one and a half months has had cannot be denied.
